Gallbladder polyps

A condition in which an abnormal overgrowth of tissue forms on the inside or outside wall of the gallbladder. This can lead to a situation where the polyp makes it more difficult for the bile to drain, which can lead to the formation of cholelithiasis. In addition, in some conditions, the polyp can become malignant and cause the development of more significant abnormalities. Gallbladder polyps are treated by means of:

  • Cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder with all of its contents through direct access);
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder with its contents by laparoscopic means).

Gallbladder polyps are worth treating in the first instance if they make it difficult for the patient to live a normal and comfortable life. In addition, if polyps are found to be the cause of the patient’s ailment, the gallbladder must be removed, regardless of its size.
