Achalasia cardia

Achalasia cardia is a condition characterised by a complete absence or inadequate relaxation of the oesophagal sphincter (also known as the cardiac sphincter), mainly at its junction with the stomach. As a result, it is possible to observe obstruction of the oesophagus in the areas closest to the stomach and dilation of the areas above it.

The main surgical procedures commonly performed for achalasia of the cardia include the following:

  • Laparoscopic myotomy (the muscular layer of the oesophagus is partially excised so that its tone returns to normal);
  • Resection (complete excision of the altered parts of the oesophagus).

It should be noted that achalasia of the cardia is considered a rather dangerous disease that can lead to the development of a number of more dangerous pathologies. These include, for example, cancer of the oesophagus and the cardiac sphincter of the oesophagus. Therefore, if you think you may have achalasia of the oesophagus, you should see your doctor.
